Victoria Line set in Stone

Victoria BricksYesterday’s ‘flooding‘ in reality turned out to be a brand new reason as to why the Tube was delayed. It rapidly transpired that it wasn’t just water that had leaked into a signal control room at Victoria, but as part of the £695m upgrade to the station the workmen/contractors had somehow managed to fill up a signal relay room with a few feet of wet cement.

Website Us Vs Th3m got the scoop on the photos (no word as to how they were leaked, we’re guessing that someone high up in TfL was NOT happy about that). Also, with some people predicting that it might be a whole week until it was all removed and cleaned up, it was good to know that people had clearly worked very hard overnight to clear it up, and the Victoria Line was back to a normal service this morning.

Twitter descended into a plethora of puns yesterday, with the obvious gags being of ‘Wanting concrete evidence’, ‘Mortar follow’, and ‘Workman responsible fears he may become hardened criminal’, and of course ‘The Circle Line is now the Blue Circle Line’ [Blue Circle is a manufacturer of cement]. But our favourite was actually from user @paulsilburn who came up with this:

‘Concrete on the Victoria line is affecting services to Brickston and connections to the Cementral Line’

Covent Garden Closing

It’s as if we’re mind readers.   Just yesterday we were musing about the possibility of Covent Garden doing ‘a Camden Town’ and closing at particular times, and that’s exactly what’s happening … well, sort of.

Covent Garden Lift

TfL just put out a press release to announce some works to the station to upgrade its lifts, and give them 25% more capacity.  We’re still not quite sure how they can replace the four lifts with lifts that are 25% bigger without using some sort of TARDIS/Timelord like technology, but I guess we’ll just have to take their word for it.

The main effect of this is that Covent Garden will be exit only for 10 months from Monday 24th February onwards. In addition, westbound trains will not stop at all at weekends – meaning you’ll have to get off at Leicester Square instead.

Covent Garden Sign

Whilst all this great, and extra lift capacity will ease the problem (the modern lifts will also travel faster, meaning quicker shunting of passengers up and down, too) we can’t but help wonder whether it’ll also obviously be used as an experiment to see if Leicester Square station can cope on Saturdays, and in the long term – even with the new lifts – we will yet see ‘a Camden Town’ happening at Covent Garden.

No Bakerloo or Northern at Embankment

No EmbankmentA reminder that work started today at Embankment station to replace the old escalators down to both the Bakerloo and Northern Line platforms, meaning that from today – and until November when it is projected work will be finished, only District and Circle line trains will be stopping at Embankment station.   This is actually the only new thing that we’ve spotted on the latest tube map, everything else looks the same as before!

No Embankment PosterTfL point out on their website, that it’s literally a 60 second walk up or down Villiers street between Embankment station and Charing Cross meaning you can get to your Bakerloo and Northern Line services there instead.
